What Type of Ants Do I Have?

The four most common ant species in the Greater Baton Rouge Area are: Carpenter Ants, Pharaoh Ants, Fire Ants, and Pavement Ants.

These species operate differently from one another. Therefore, W.O.L.F. Pest Control uses various treatment methods that consider the biology and habits of the pests. Mistreatment could lead to worse activity.

Fire Ants

Reddish brown in color, these ants live in mounds by the thousands. Worst of all, this invasive species intrudes and stings.

Fire ant colonies are typically comprised of female worker ants and one queen, who is responsible for laying the eggs. Workers create underground tunnels that can extend up to 25 feet away from the mound. The fire ant lifecycle has four stages. Eggs—Larvae—Pupae—Adult. They feed on a range of foods, including insects, plant nectar, seeds, fruits, and dead animals. They are highly attracted to foods high in fat. It can take several months for a colony to grow a mound that is large enough to be visible.

Carpenter Ants

Measuring from 0.75cm to 2.6cm, these ants construct their nest by making small galleries in wood. Colonies can be commonly found in hollow areas of a sick tree or in moist, rotted, or damaged wood found around a home. These ideal areas may include: railroad ties, wooden decks, or the wooden structure of a home. Although there are many species, the black carpenter ant (seen here) is the most common found here.

Their diet consists of sweets and meats, not wood (like termites); however, they can contribute to serious structural damage if the infestation goes untreated. Eventually, carpenter ants create additional satellite nests and expand into different areas, which can ultimately invade your space or your neighbors.

Pharaoh Ants

These small brown/yellowish-looking ants can be one of the hardest to control because they rapidly expand their nests. Each colony produces a queen that wanders, creating a new colony, perpetuating a vicious cycle.

The use of insecticide sprays from the store often makes infestations much worse by encouraging new colonies throughout a home. Our slow-acting, commercial baits, placed in various locations throughout a structure, are just one of many tools we use to successfully eliminate pharaoh ants.

If seen, contact WOLF Pest Control. Their constant search for food, to feed growing colonies, makes your home a perfect place.

Pavement Ants

Usually black and about 2.5 – 4mm long, these ants get their name from typically making nests in the pavement. You may see ant mounds forming on your driveway during the summer, which have been created by these ants to ventilate their nest.

They may also nest indoors, often under baseboards, inside walls, and under floors. They enjoy eating many foods humans eat, so they are often found invading kitchens.

One colony has numerous queens. In the summer months, queens leave a colony and start new ones. Reproducing quickly, with hard-to-locate nests, reach out to the WOLF professionals for the best treatment method for you and your home.

Ant FAQs

What Are Ants?

Ants are social insects that live together in large colonies. They work together to help feed all their members, defend the colony, and maintain their multiple nesting sites. Their ability to work so well together is what makes eliminating these pests so difficult.

Ants are excellent communicators, leaving pheromone trails to guide members of their colony back and forth from the nest to food sources. Once ants discover a reliable source of food, they will keep returning.

How Do I Treat Ants?

Our techs inspect your home to properly identify your problem before any treatment. Once we have identified the ant, we establish treatment plans based on its biology and habits. The baits we use have a delay effect, allowing foragers to alert other ants and bring the bait back to the colony. Once the bait is shared with the others and the queen, the colony will soon be eliminated. Our bait provides long-lasting use and helps control future activity.

Some species require additional liquid and dust interior/exterior treatment. Some are not as drawn to food, so apply liquid residuals and dusts inside cracks, crevices, and problem areas, which are sure to eliminate the remaining ants of the colony. Regardless of the species, ants are no match for Wolf Pest Control.

Where Will I Find Ants?

Ants don’t usually live indoors; they prefer to nest outside, usually in the ground in damp soil. Every day, worker ants leave their nest and go in search of food. As they travel, they wind up in our homes, moving through cracks and openings they discover in the foundation, under doors, and through spaces around utilities, like cables or wires.

In our homes, it is common to discover ants trailing on the floor, tables, and counters as they search for crumbs and sticky liquids to feed on and bring back to the colony. If they find food in your home, they will keep returning.

If food is scarce outside or weather conditions are unsuitable, they may decide to nest indoors. Ants typically build their nests in secluded areas, such as behind walls, under floors, behind appliances, or within structural wood.

How Can I Prevent Ants in the future?

You can’t eliminate ants, but there are steps you can take to maintain a yard and home so you don’t see ants at every turn.

  • Keep ants from marching into your house by sealing spaces in exterior walls, the foundation, and under and around windows and doors.

  • Take away what ants are most attracted to: FOOD. Keep lids on trash cans, keep your home’s kitchen clean, store food properly, and vacuum regularly.

  • Routinely remove trash from your property.

  • Remove leaf piles and other yard debris that can trap moisture. Ants find that highly attractive.

  • Seal the spaces around pipes, cables, and wires that enter your house.

  • Cut back shrubs and bushes from your home’s exterior, so ants can’t climb and gain access to your home.

Are Ants Dangerous?

Each species is unique, and any of them can become an unwanted intruder on your property if it offers basic needs (food, water, and shelter).

Though fire ant stings are harmful, most ants are more of a nuisance than a danger.
